President's Message September 2021
In reflecting on my career at the start of this new chapter as your SMPS Utah President, I can’t help but realize how many opportunities and personal and professional friendships have been a direct result of my many years of SMPS membership. I first joined SMPS as a 21-year-old, fresh out of college with a job as Marketing Coordinator in a one-person marketing department at a growing architecture firm. There, in my hometown of New Orleans, I was quickly “schooled” by some generous pros willing to share their advice and experiences in the A/E/C industry. Together, we dug into the work of establishing our own SMPS Chapter. A couple of moves later, it is a privilege to find myself serving as your chapter President for this upcoming Board Year ahead.
While I know we keep hearing it … it is in fact, still true. We are walking, yet again, into another year unlike even the past year or the year before that. We don’t yet know where the Coronavirus pandemic will take us over these next 12 months. Still, I can confidently say that you have a Board of Directors ready and willing to pivot, serve, and support our members wherever the road takes us. We know, above all else, that we need to remain flexible and focused on delivering you value for your membership.
Past President Stephanie Ray (2019–2020) helped us dig in when the pandemic first hit; immediate Past President Emily Hymas (2020–2021) helped us collectively find solutions and accept community realities for ourselves, our companies, and our organization.
It is my sincere hope that I get to be the Chapter President that helps us emerge from this challenging pandemic as a new, revitalized chapter, ready to grow and keep pace with the growing design and construction marketplace of Utah. (Fingers crossed!)
This year, your new Board of Directors has two main objectives. We will focus on diversifying our voices, from the professionals we learn from and the colleagues we are members alongside to the talent serving in marketing roles in our growing local firms. We will focus on providing real, tangible insight into the high-quality projects our firms are eager to land. With several new Board Members at the helm, be sure to look out for some wild new ideas and opportunities as we take some risks and hopefully have the chance to deliver some new events and educational formats.
Lastly, a big “thank you” is certainly in order for our outgoing Board Members who have fulfilled their leadership roles during one of the most trying years yet. They learned new technologies to planned programs amidst the unknown, andreinvented what membership and sponsorship looks like. Stephanie Ray; Aimee Fuhriman; Julee Attig, CPSM; Rhianna Riggs; Amber Winn; and Cali Centurion have driven this organization tirelessly this past year, and for some, many years before as well. Please be sure to thank them for their dedicated service the next time you have the chance to connect at one of our events!
Sincerely,

Nicole Marshall, CPSM
