President's Message October 2021

I have heard the same conversation for months now … "I think this is the busiest we have ever been;” “Our firm has so much going on right now I can’t even keep up;” or “I don’t even know how I’m going to get it all done while still getting even a wink of sleep.”

Our industry here in Utah is undeniably booming right now.

What a GREAT problem to have, but a problem nonetheless!

As we all dig in for an even busier Fall and Winter season ahead, I wanted to take a moment to implore you to step back, take a breath, and do your best to look for ways to manage the pile you find yourself under instead of simply taking bites out of it. Ways that don’t just merely send you down the never-ending set of boxes to be checked, but rather to reduce the total load on your own back.

I find that when I take the time to consider the things that demand the most time out of my work week, it’s not too long before I clearly see the pain points, the problem children, and the opportunities to course correct.

As you craft your inventory of ever-evolving responsibilities in writing—or simply dust off the old one from your employee file—have a conversation with your manager, reach out to your industry peers in SMPS, or even share the list with your closest family and friends. An outside set of eyes can help you see where you could be taking on things that perhaps you shouldn’t, where you could be delegating, or where you and your firm could be outsourcing some of your responsibilities.

With nearly fifteen years of experience working in this industry, I am continuously amazed by the hard workers, the go-getters, and the multi-tasking miracle workers our field seems to attract. I also have seen SO. MANY. OF. US. not stick up for ourselves in ways that might be more common in other fields. This can lead to high rates of burnout in our various roles and a rotating door of new faces in our firms simply because we didn’t vocalize our needs before choosing to hit the exit button.

As peers, friends, and comrades in this good marketing fight, let’s make a point this season to help each other problem-solve our way out of burnout, so we can collectively celebrate this thriving season of growth for our firms.

If you are looking for help, don’t forget to log in to MySMPS and connect with your peers all around the country for advice and ideas in our Member Communities. If you put your responsibility list together and find that you are doing the job of two or even three people, talk with your managers about expanding your team in 2022 and hiring with the help of our local SMPS Utah job board. From my experience, speaking up, asking for more hands on deck, and creating that new position can pay off quickly for both you and your firm if you simply take the initiative to communicate about it.

Good luck out there, and remember that deep breath part … let’s find more ways to enjoy this wonderful, bustling ride we are all on together by brainstorming our way out from under the overwhelm together!

Sincerely,

Nicole Marshall, CPSM
