President's Message December 2021

This year has been a blur. From bouncing in and out of COVID safety precautions; to understanding major changing forces such as workforce challenges and price inflation; to finally getting to see and spend time with many family and friends again; it feels like an emotional ride of a year.

It always seems, though, no matter the year, that this season is full of deep breaths and sweet treats and simple pleasures. For that, I will always be grateful.

As we take these deep breaths and make some time to celebrate the changing of the calendar, I hope that you all take a few minutes to reflect on how lucky we are to be in this tremendous industry. While sometimes the deadlines can be rough and the stakes high, we have a lot to be thankful for when it comes to the field in which we work. Whether we are renovating failing, dangerous roads and structures or bringing new spaces and new opportunities to growing communities, the tangible nature and the visible impact of our work is something that not everyone gets to experience.

I also want to take this opportunity to express my thanks to all of you, our SMPS Utah community, for working with us as we have tried to get the train back on the track this year. After a big pause away from in-person gathering, we re-emerged this Fall with some great opportunities to connect in person, hug one another, and network the good old-fashioned way. We’re grateful for your willingness to give it a shot with us and for your patience when we may get it wrong here or there.

I am hopeful that 2022 will bring some wonderful new opportunities for our Chapter as well. With new event venues, a growing membership base, and exciting first-time opportunities (see some thrilling news soon about an event in St. George!), we’re ready to continue to stretch ourselves and find new and better ways to serve you.

I also hope that in this season of deep breaths, you take the opportunity to share with others how wonderful the A/E/C marketing field truly is. Our member companies are growing and in need of more hands on deck. Join me in an effort to recruit new faces and help our member firms grow and elevate their marketing game. Be sure to check out our job board for some of these fantastic current openings.

I hope you all have some wonderful family time in the weeks ahead. I look forward to seeing each of you at our many upcoming events, both in-person and virtual.

My sincerest thanks for your friendship in 2021. My door is always open for your ideas as we leap into the new year!

Warmest of wishes,

Nicole Marshall, CPSM
