How long have you worked at your company?
13 months
How would you describe your role/job?
I assist with crafting proposals, advertising content, award submissions, presentations, etc. I also attend and run meetings for go/no-go’s and kickoffs for proposals. I assist teams within the company with anything they need assistance from marketing on. I also help with public handouts, fact sheets, etc. on current/ongoing projects. It is a position where I am constantly learning and growing and, in my experience, has allowed me to shine while learning from the talents and experience of others.
What are the rewards of your job?
I love that I am encouraged to learn and grow and that I feel supported by every member of our team. I’m given the chance to grow and develop my own professional path.
What are your challenges?
We sometimes struggle with responsiveness, but by and large, we get the materials and feedback we need within the requested timeframe.
What has been your most meaningful project?
This is a great one. I actually have two. First, we had a large proposal that we didn’t end up winning, but it was a large effort to put together, and I had just started work. I learned so much from that proposal and it pushed me to think beyond what I knew. Second, we recently had a proposal that was a big effort, but it ended up being an even bigger project than we originally anticipated, and it will be a heritage project for the community. I’m excited to see that one develop and what the end result will be!
How has SMPS membership helped you?
I’m just getting started, but I’m excited about the learning opportunities it will provide.
What’s the best career advice you’ve received?
Don’t be afraid to go outside your comfort zone (do the thing that scares you!) and be a lifelong learner.
What’s the best career advice you’ve given?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. It’s better to ask so you can learn and grow than to do it wrong and need to redo it.
What has contributed to your success?
My family is a huge part of my success. I returned to school after more than a decade away and they supported the late-night studying and homework assignments. Likewise, they support me working full-time and help me celebrate my wins (personal and professional).
Professionally, I have to say the team I work with. They make it so I am comfortable with asking questions and encourage my desire to learn. They are always there to help with ideas, reviews, etc.
What’s on your bucket list?
I would love to travel all over the world, but I’d especially love to take my mom to Italy. She has always supported me, even when my ways were unconventional, and she’s always wanted to go there.
What was your childhood dream?
I wanted to be a mom and a creative designer of some kind. I guess I got both of those wishes. 😉
Guilty pleasure: what can you not live without?
Travel guides/vlogs. If I have any free time, I’m either learning languages or doing something to do with travel. Also, planning Disney trips with my family.
