How would you describe your role/job?
WOW! It's everything you would expect if you put Marketing, Business Development, and HR in your favorite blender and pulsed for 5–10 seconds. Who knew that three “hats” could be so rewarding and kick your tail end at the same time. It keeps me grounded and reminds me that I am 110% dedicated and in no way perfect. Yet, I keep coming back for more. It must be love!
What are the rewards of your job?
I get the luxury of being able to affect, influence, laugh with, cry with, and build relationships internally AND externally in all that I do. How cool is that! The satisfaction of knowing that I am able to make a difference with each touch-point, task, process, and project is the true reward.
What are your challenges?
I do wish that I could duplicate myself in order to be even more effective, but I’d probably end up being best friends with myself, or firing me for “squirreling” too much. Seriously though … too many ideas without enough time to execute.
What has been your most meaningful project?
I could tell you, but I’d have to … (project coming soon). The entire team is working on some great things.
How has SMPS membership helped you?
Networking-networking-networking! I’ve had the pleasure of pairing up with a great mentor through the SMPS Mentorship program. That has been invaluable as a resource and has fostered many teaching moments. The relationships that I have built within the AEC Marketing industry are unparalleled. SMPS has some amazing members holding an immense amount of talent.
What’s the best career advice you’ve received?
There are several. The few that come to mind are …
- Slow down & breathe (I’ve not mastered this one yet)
- It doesn’t have to be perfect to be a great idea; work with it
- STOP BEING AFRAID to try
- Sometimes life is an experience and sometimes it’s a lesson. Gain all that you can from each incredible moment.
What’s the best career advice you’ve given?
Remember, more often than not, there is a human at the other end of the equation. NEVER treat that responsibility lightly.
What has contributed to your success?
Believe it or not, the words I live by which have allowed me to have success more often than not are: Seek First to Understand, then be Understood—Habit 5 of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I have to express my gratitude to the many individuals, bosses, and friends who believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself and gave me an opportunity to learn and grow from success or failure.
What’s on your bucket list?
Vacationing in Bora Bora in a hut on the ocean, attending a Madonna concert, and meeting Linda Carter (the original Wonder Woman) in person. Judge all you want! It’s not your bucket. ☺
What was your childhood dream?
To own a home overlooking the ocean with a convertible in the garage just waiting to be driven—hmmmm noticing a theme ☺
Guilty pleasure:
Music! It lifts me, calms me, excites me, and allows me to escape when necessary.
