Title: Marketing Specialist
Company: FOCUS Consulting

How long have you worked at your company?
Over a year

How long have you been an SMPS member?
I just joined in January

How would you describe your role/job?
I do graphic design, photography, and assist in other business development/marketing efforts.

What are the rewards of your job?
I love being able to see the efforts of our marketing department make a difference for our engineers. Whether that’s creating a stronger brand, or helping to foster and maintain great client relationships.

What are your challenges?
The challenge is also a boon, in a way. Working in the marketing department requires us to wear a lot of hats. Every day in the office could look completely different from the other. We are constantly exploring new projects and new ways of reaching a wider market. It’s challenging, but rewarding.

What has been your most meaningful project?
I’ve been focusing on business development to help our Transportation Engineering department to seek out new opportunities. It’s been great to see that effort result in new meetings and new relationships being built. I’m excited to see us develop this effort even further.

How has SMPS membership helped you?
[At the time of filling out the questionnaire,] it’s too early to say for me yet, but I’ve seen the way that membership has benefited other members of my team; I’m excited to learn more and make connections.

What’s the best career advice you’ve received?
Always ask questions and commit yourself to lifelong learning. That’s the best way to develop as a person and grow your skills and confidence.

What’s the best career advice you’ve given?
It’s never too late to try something new or learn a new skill.

What has contributed to your success?
I’m still new at FOCUS, but having a supportive team makes all the difference to developing and growing my knowledge/skills.

What's on your bucket list?
I would love to travel to all 50 states.

What was your childhood dream?
I wanted to be an artist. I use visual communication every day at work, so in a way I’m doing something very adjacent to that childhood ideal.

Guilty pleasure:
I love baked goods—both baking them and eating them. I need to find people to give them away to or I’ll tear through a whole batch of cookies in a blink.
