Dana Sohm, Founder and CEO of Sohm Photografx, LLC, is a valuable member of SMPS and has always been passionate about his work, translating to an excellent eye for the best angles.

How long have you worked at your company?
I founded my company in 2003 and have worked there ever since.

Do you have any accreditations you want listed?
- Master of Photography degree, Professional Photographers of America
- Juris Doctor Degree, University of Utah
- Assistant Instructor of digital photography, University of Utah

How would you describe your role/job?
Head photographer, photoshop artist, drone pilot, accountant, and janitor.

What are the rewards of your job?
I have the best job in the world. Photography is my creative and artistic outlet. I love getting up before dawn and shooting past sunset when the light is sweet. I love the variety of buildings I shoot.

I recently received my FAA part 107 commercial drone pilot certification. Every aerial photography “mission” is exhilarating and terrifying. I have totally developed an aversion to trees.

What are your challenges?
Every building has its unique challenges and requires adapting to light that can change with building orientation, time of day, etc. I am often called on to photograph buildings under less than optimum conditions. There may be construction debris, obstructing vehicles, etc. Each challenge requires creativity resourcefulness to overcome.

What has been your most meaningful project?
My most enjoyable project was photographing the St. Regis resort in Punta Mita, Mexico with another architectural photographer. We had a full week to shoot every room style and every restaurant at the resort as well as pools and the beach. We photographed the resort in 2013. Much has changes since then, but St. Regis still uses many our pictures on its website.

I took the Altamira Reflecting Pool at sunset, for example.

What is your role in SMPS?
SMPS Board member 2011-2012

I have served of several committees before and since.

How has SMPS membership helped you?
SMPS has been extraordinarily useful. Most of my clients I met through SMPS.

What’s the best career advice you’ve received?
Take the leap. Follow your passion. I gave-up a law career to become a full-time photographer and have never looked back.

What’s the best career advice you’ve given?
Hmm. I don’t generally give career advice. Everyone needs to make their own decisions and choose their own path in life.

What has contributed to your success?
A dogged determination to continuously improve my photography skills and to add value to my clients.

What’s on your bucket list?
Many places to visit including:
- Iceland volcanoes, ice caves, northern lights.
- Iguazu Falls
- Patagonia
- Antarctica
- Angkor wat
- Dubai
- Zhangiiajile Floating mountains
- Yanshuo China river and mountains

What was a childhood dream of yours?
To be Astronaut (until I found out that weightlessness causes motion sickness. I don’t do well with motion sickness.)

Guilty pleasure: what can you not live without?
Yoga
