How would you describe your role/job?
I manage marketing, business development, and office operations at HFC, a civil engineering firm. I develop and implement marketing strategies, lead the proposal process, and help to identify opportunities. I’m also the go-to person for figuring out all non-engineering challenges.
What are the rewards of your job?
I enjoy the constant opportunity to grow and expand my knowledge. Every week presents new challenges that allow me to learn and develop both professionally and personally. Earlier this year, I tackled the implementation of new accounting software—so what’s on the schedule for this quarter? Hopefully something a bit less complicated, like learning to solve a Rubik’s cube.
What are your challenges?
Working for a small business presents the challenge of wearing many hats. Balancing multiple responsibilities, from marketing and business development to office management, requires being awesome and effective time management.
How has SMPS membership helped you?
SMPS membership has introduced me to a network of professionals who understand the unique challenges of our industry. While I'm still getting to know more people, the connections I've made so far have been wonderful. I truly appreciated being able to relate to the industry-specific jokes at the last national conference, and I’m also excited about the cool educational events that provide valuable insights and foster professional growth.
What is the best career advice you've received?
The best career advice I've received comes from a famous Star Wars quote: "Do or do not, there is no try." It reminds me that success often comes from committing fully to a task, not just attempting it. Whether learning new skills or tackling challenges, it's about diving in with determination and confidence.
What’s the best career advice you’ve given?
The best career advice I've given? Honestly, who knows! Being a mom to teenagers has shown me that while we’re eager to share our wisdom, not everyone is ready to hear it.
What has contributed to your success?
My success can be attributed to my willingness to embrace new experiences and take on challenges. By stepping outside my comfort zone and being open to trying new things, I've been able to grow.
What’s on your bucket list?
My bucket list includes visiting all seven continents, and I’m excited to say I’ve made it to three so far. I look forward to exploring the remaining four and experiencing the unique cultures and landscapes each one has to offer!
What was your childhood dream?
As a child, I dreamed of living in Venice, Italy, imagining myself swimming to school through its canals each day. Last year, I finally got to visit this beautiful city, though I passed on swimming in the canals! It was an amazing experience that brought a childhood vision to life in a way I’ll never forget.
Guilty pleasure: what can you not live without?
I can’t live without Dr. Pepper! It’s my go-to beverage—I'm pretty sure it powers my caffeine-driven creativity. If you see me without a can, you might want to check if I’m still functioning.
