Jacob Mortensen, Marketing Manager | R&O Construction |

Jacob Mortensen, Marketing Manager at R&O Construction, began in video production before focusing in on the strategy inherent in marketing. After years of study and practical application, he is an invaluable AEC marketer.

How did you get into marketing?

Marketing found me. I didn’t even know it was happening until I was in too deep to turn back. Not that I wanted to. I began this journey some time ago through video production. I was able to create compelling videos for my clients that, ultimately did nothing. This was because I’d hand them a product (tactic) they didn’t know how to use or implement.

So I began the arduous journey of later-in-life education to figure out how I could help them. A few really expensive pieces of paper later, diverse experience from all perspectives of business from educational organizations, non-profits, small privately held companies, and even a few large corporations, and that’s where I fell in love with the nitty-gritty, geeky side of data and how powerful it can be when combined with the proper strategy. Or to put short marketing.

Why did you join SMPS?

Flash forward a few years and I was well into my newfound endgame plan, the badge on the door said “marketing manager” and I was set. Or, so I thought. We all know what happened to tradeshows in the spring of 2020 and marketing for an elite tradeshow exhibit builder shared the same fate.

Which lands us here now. A new unexpected love, the AEC community. A family I had never met but, who was prepping me for this day all along. And a new mentor (boss) who baited me by saying, oh so casually, “There’s this group you might like, it’s called SMPS, check it out if you have a moment.”  It’s only been a short time since I’ve joined and it feels like I’ve always been right here. And based on the experiences we’ve shared already, I know this group and the journeys we share along the way will build the future of marketing in the AEC sectors.

Recently I attended Southwest Regional Conference and while there I asked Nancy Usrey what one of her biggest “would of, should of, could of,” moments in her career were. She only paused but a moment and replied that at every step, no matter if it were good or bad, she was right where she should be, and that it was up to us in each situation to make that possible. Well, if that isn’t spot on, I don’t know what is. May we all realize this early. I’m glad this group “found me,” and I look forward to sharing the journey with you.
