How long have you worked in the AEC Industry?
I have been in the industry since I was 14 years old when I started working for my Dad’s civil engineering company. I’m 25 now ;), you can do the math. I started MARKETLINK 20 years ago this year. It’s been a rewarding milestone for sure.
What are the rewards of your job?
One of the rewards of my job is that I get to work with so many different disciplines of firms in the industry. It has taught me so much more about the full spectrum of impact our industry has on the built environment.
How long have you been an SMPS member?
I’ve been an SMPS member for approximately 33 years. I was the first student member of the chapter the year it was formed.
What led you to serve on the Board?
I was part of the planning and organization of the chapter and have always been so passionate about the success and growth of the chapter. There weren’t very many of us in the beginning, so it was partially necessity but mostly it was just a desire I had to be part of the movement.
How has SMPS membership helped you?
SMPS membership has been the most important part of my career. Without the education, networking, connections, friendships, resources and support of SMPS, I would not have stayed in this industry.
What is something you have learned recently from someone in our industry?
Recently I was reminded that as “seasoned” industry leaders we need to remember that our words and actions are on display at all times. What we do, what we say, what we “take part in” is always a reflection on our industry, our professionalism, and our firm. I learned a lot from a young marketer recently about standing up for what you feel is right and being a good example. I really appreciated her example. It’s a good reminder that no matter how much experience we have, we can, and should, always learn from others.
What are you most looking forward to in the next six months in your role as a board member?
I am looking forward to our retreat for next year. I am always so excited for a new board to infuse energy into our chapter. My new role as SWRC Conference Director is exciting because Utah is hosting the next regional conference. I’m excited to gather input from membership about what we feel is the best approach to showcasing our state and providing opportunities for education to our region.
What is one of your favorite business books?
There’s an old book that I love and recommend to marketing and technical staff all the time. It’s called "Clientship: Building Client Service Bridges to Profitability" and is written by Michael Kennedy and Steve Greenberg. It is a workbook that teaches that client relationships in the AEC industry are as important, if not more important, than technical experience. It is all about client service and the role it plays in selection for projects.
What is one of your favorite non-business books?
"All the Light We Cannot See" by Anthony Doerr. I'm so excited because it’s going to be coming out as a movie soon.
What is something exciting that has happened in your life during the last year?
I became a grandma to a sweet little baby girl named Jordy (JoJo). It’s been life changing.
What's on your bucket list?
I just crossed off one item on my bucket list in May. We traveled to Italy and Greece, and I have always wanted to go to Santorini. It was amazing. The next item on my bucket list for travel is to go to Spain and Portugal. My husband and oldest son served missions for our church in Spain and my middle son is serving in Portugal right now. We are planning a trip with the whole family next year to go travel in that area.
