Name: Suela Kaufman
Company: MGB+A
Title: Marketing Director / Office Manager
Board Role: Director of Special Events
How long have you worked at your company?
A little over four years.
What are the rewards of your job?
Supporting landscape architects and designers in creating outdoor spaces, changing the fabric of our cities, and making them walkable, enjoyable, healthy, and inclusive is priceless. Plus, no one day is like the other at my office. There are always new projects requiring a new approach and a different mindset.
What are your challenges?
Being the only person in a small office, you get to wear many hats. Staying on task to make everything happen is a challenge.
How long have you been an SMPS member?
12–13 years ... I have lost count.
What led you to serve on the Board?
It is gratifying to give back. Giving back to an association that has given me so much is the least I can do.
How has SMPS membership helped you?
SMPS gave me a complete understanding of marketing in the AEC industry, and it continues to provide tools that increase the value I bring to my organization. The connections and relationships I have made through SMPS are invaluable.
What’s the best career advice you’ve received?
Find your strengths and pursue any goal that matches those strengths.
What’s the best career advice you’ve given?
Attitude is everything. You can achieve anything if you have the right attitude.
What is one of your favorite business books?
Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown. It was suggested to me by an SMPS member/friend.
What is one of your favorite non-business books?
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
What’s on your bucket list?
My bucket list is deep. On a personal level, I would like to travel more—revisit the Olympic Peninsula, Glacier National Park, Banff, and Jasper National Parks; travel again through Europe and visit old friends; visit the ocean as often as possible and live by the sea one day; save The Great Salt Lake so I can continue to row there, kayak, snowshoe and learn to play the piano. On a business level, I would like to learn more about urban design and city planning, and sustainable living.
