How long have you worked at your company?
Four years as of this month.
How would you describe your role/job?
Well, I am guessing that much like many of my SMPS peers, I am the one who wears many hats. Proposals are certainly a big part of my role. As is social media, website management, conference sponsorship management, etc. The list goes on.
As a small, but growing firm, the job seems to grow more and more each day, and I’m glad about that!
What are the rewards of your job?
Winning a project, or even being shortlisted, is a wonderful thrill. It’s a moment where my work on strategy and the clarity of messaging really feels like it pays off. Not to mention, it’s a great moment of proof for my value to my firm!
Good positive external feedback on promotional items or pieces or presentations—that also provides me a great sense of reward.
What are the most notable challenges working in this industry?
The hardest part can be getting firm principals to buy in and make the investment needed for marketing. We work in a rapidly changing and crowded industry, and the importance of marketing, business development, and brand awareness is growing each day. It can be hard to help people who are not full-time marketers understand that.
What has been your most meaningful project?
I recently helped encourage my firm to sign on as a KUER sponsor, the local NPR station here in Utah. I believe that it’s a great tactic for name recognition and brand awareness, and on top of that, it benefits the communities that we work in. It feels like a really good win-win usage of marketing dollars.
How long have you been an SMPS member?
For as long as I have been at JRCA! As soon as I was hired, the principals suggested that I join the Chapter. They had been attending events and knew right away that it would be an important resource to keep my knowledge and connections in the industry growing.
What is your role on the Board?
Registration Coordinator
What led you to serve on the Board?
I love to get involved in anything I join. It’s an addiction!
I first got involved serving on the Communications Committee, and then when I had the opportunity to serve on the Board, I was thrilled. I’m looking forward to serving as the Sponsorship Director next year.
How has SMPS membership helped you?
This organization has helped me meet many people. That has been invaluable to me, being newer to the industry. It has also helped me learn new things and connect with potential partners for JRCA as well.
What’s on your bucket list?
Travel is always on my bucket list! I am always thinking about Ireland and Switzerland, and I would love to go to Asia, India, or Hong Kong as well.
What was a childhood dream of yours?
When I was a little kid, I actually remember wanting to be an architect. My parents got me a little drafting table at one point, and I would draw house designs (for myself of course).
Funny when life comes full circle like this!
Guilty pleasure: what can you not live without?
Coffee. But I’m not so sure I feel that guilty about it!
Any other tidbits about your life you might be willing to share?
After college, I graduated with a degree in hotel and restaurant management then I spent years working in the hospitality industry. I think it really helped shape who I am. It certainly helps me as a marketer, as I learned to focus on understanding my audiences and their pain points. I also learned that sometimes when people have grievances, all they want is to be heard.
I live in Holladay with my husband and have a sweet dog. Happy to have been introduced to Utah when my dad got a job transfer here when I was in high school.
