Kellie Goddard, Director of Business Development & Communications at Hansen, Allen & Luce, is a long-standing member of SMPS and the industry, bringing an especially thoughtful, nuanced perspective to her insights.
How long have you worked at your company?
2 ½ years at HAL, 25 years in the A/E industry.

Prosci Certified Change Practitioner
How would you describe your role/job?
I get the opportunity to collaborate with a team of smart, talented engineering professionals through the maze of client relations, business development, and communications. Working together, we develop sound solutions that address the water resource needs of our clients.
What are the rewards of your job?
At the end of each day, I get to lay my head down knowing that I made a small contribution in shaping the future of water resources for my community and future generations—including my own children and grandchildren.
What are your challenges?
Utah is experiencing the highest population growth among the United States. This has led to an unusually high demand for new and improved infrastructure to adequately support the growing residential and commercial markets. The challenge is keeping up with the demands that our clients are facing and knowing how to best assist them during this time.
What has been your most meaningful project?
In 2006 I had an opportunity to work on The American College & University Presidents' Climate Commitment. The project involved a plan for institutes of higher education to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, carbon footprint and become climate neutral.
What is your role in SMPS?
Over the years I have served on the education and membership committees.
How long have you been an SMPS member?
18 years
How has SMPS membership helped you?
The life-long professional friendships I have established through SMPS have been immeasurable. The education committee provides valuable forums on timely topics, and the resource center and SMPS store are truly helpful. Organized study groups for my CPSM exam were appreciated too!
What’s the best career advice you’ve received?
To be myself in all situations. I love the Zen Buddhism adage, “how you do one thing is how you do everything.”
What’s the best career advice you’ve given?
Be thoughtful in whatever you are doing and take the time necessary to do it right.
What has contributed to your success?
A very supportive family! In this industry we work long days, sometimes through the weekend and during planned vacations, holidays, etc. I would not be successful if it weren’t for a supportive (flexible) family and relationships that recognize my dedication and commitment to my career.
What’s on your bucket list?
It’s a big list! It includes visiting notable national and state parks. Of course, I started with those in Utah and nearby states. I’ve checked off Arches, Bryce, Zion and Joshua Tree to name a few. I can check off Niagara Falls this October 2021! Vacations to Chichén Itzá, Palenque, the Greek Isles, Saint Barthélemy Island, and Saint Martin are also on my bucket list.
What was a childhood dream of yours?
When I was in my late teens and early twenties, I thought about becoming a dermatologist. My one regret is not following my heart down that career path.
Guilty pleasure: what can you not live without?
Me time. If I am cold, tired, or hungry we’re in for a long day!
