How long have you worked at your company?
20 years

How long have you been an SMPS member?
16 years

How would you describe your role/job?
Chief Photographer, Digital Image Editor, Marketing Director, Director of Business Development, Chief Information Officer, Videographer, Opera Photographer, Drone Operator, Event Photographer, University Instructor, Accountant, Dietician, Facilities Manager, and Janitor.

What are the rewards of your job?
I am so grateful to have a job I really love. Photographing buildings, people and performing arts is endlessly varied and never boring. Every travel opportunity is a photographic opportunity.

What are your challenges?
I've had to learn to be a lot less shy.

What has been your most meaningful project?
Perhaps my first professional job was the most significant. I photographed the Salt Lake Library shortly after it opened, working with Steve Crane, VCBO. Such a great building. Such an honor to get to know Moshe Safdie.

How has SMPS membership helped you?
I have  met most of my AEC clients through SMPS.

What’s the best career advice you’ve received?
Dare to take the leap of faith from practicing law to starting my own photography business, relying solely on my own wits and skill.

What has contributed to your success?
Continuously upgrading my photographic skills and meeting great colleagues along the way. Also, my gallery site, sohmphoto.smugmug.com has become a hugely valuable asset for me and my clients. It contains photos of virtually every project I’ve photographed since 2011 beginning with event photos of that year’s National SMPS Conference. It unexpectedly became a source of stock photography for so many new clients, even some I have never met.

What’s on your bucket list?
Traveling to exotic places such as Bora Bora, Angkor Wat, the Blue Lagoon, and Iceland.

What was your childhood dream?
I wanted to become an astronaut until I heard about the side effects of motion sickness.

Guilty pleasure: what can you not live without?
Yoga
