Journey Towards CPSM: Motivation and Ambition
Kim McDonough's journey into marketing and business development within the AEC industry began not too long ago. Despite her extensive background in the industry, she recognized the need to dig deeper into the intricacies of her new role. Kim explains, "I wanted to get my CPSM because while I've been in the AEC industry my entire adult life; however, I've only been in marketing and business development since 2020." Her decision was driven by the desire to network with her peers, gain a comprehensive understanding of the field, and earn respect from her colleagues. Kim acknowledges the role of her supportive boss, who motivated her to pursue this professional milestone.
Overcoming Challenges: Strength and Resilience
Every accomplishment comes with its own set of challenges, and for Kim, finding the time to study emerged as a significant hurdle. Balancing work responsibilities and personal commitments required a strategic approach. Kim emphasizes the invaluable role of a committed study group that provided accountability and support throughout the process. Coming from the preconstruction side and being relatively new to the marketing aspect of the business posed additional challenges. While some material overlapped with her existing knowledge, other sections demanded a deeper understanding, highlighting the learning curve Kim had to navigate.
The Road Forward: Continuous Learning and Adaptability
Having achieved her CPSM certification, Kim is not one to rest on her glories. She expresses her passion for continuous learning, mentioning that prior to pursuing CPSM, she was already engaged in classes aimed at enhancing her day-to-day tasks and long-term professional development. Kim reveals, "Now that I’ve earned my CPSM, I don’t see much changing for me in the near future." However, she doesn't plan to stop her learning journey. Kim envisions exploring additional courses, potentially in writing or graphic design, showcasing her dedication to expanding her skill set and staying at the forefront of industry trends.
