How long have you worked at your company?
I have been with Ensign for 8 years and in the Utah AEC industry for 20 years. Time sure flies!
How would you describe your role/job?
I wear all the hats at Ensign, since we are a small to mid-size firm. These “hats” include proposals, client relationship development, website management, social media management, and more.
What are the rewards of your job?
Honestly, being able to work with Ensign is one of my greatest professional rewards right now. The company is wonderful, and they treat their employees with the utmost of class and integrity.
I also genuinely love being a part of this industry and the great relationships and friendships it adds to my life.
What are your challenges?
Saying “no.” I probably am guilty of taking on more than I should at any one time.
I also tend to shy away from the financial side of things and from being proactive about maintaining a budget. I am working on growing my capacity in this area, because it will be valuable to my team if I do.
What has been your most meaningful project?
Ensign is the lead firm designing a new campground project at Antelope Island. I had the opportunity to orchestrate our submission for this assignment and I found great reward in being a part of a project that will add to the quality of life in our area.
How long have you been an SMPS member?
I have consistently been a part of SMPS for most of my career – going on about 19 years of membership or so. One of my colleagues, when I was working at a national firm, introduced me to SMPS, and I will always be so grateful to her for that.
What led you to serve on the Board?
After serving as a volunteer on a committee, I quickly realized how this is a volunteer-led organization and I felt drawn to help do my part to keep the engine of SMPS Utah running. I have served on the local Board off and on over the years, around 3 or 4 years now in a row in this most recent stint.
How has SMPS membership helped you?
The networking opportunities have been a key for me. The proposal trainings and writing skills have also gone a long way for my career and for the companies I have worked with.
SMPS has also really helped me see the human side of the industry, instead of getting caught up in only the competitive or capitalistic side as can happen if you don’t get connected.
What’s the best career advice you’ve received?
Never stop learning.
What has contributed to your success?
Surrounding myself with good people. That is, good people with good morals and good work ethics.
What’s on your bucket list?
I have to say, I’m more of a “live in the moment” type of person. I don’t often daydream or make big lists for myself in that way.
What was your childhood dream?
I was too busy “living in the moment” then too! I don’t recall ever having a big childhood dream.
Guilty pleasure: what can you not live without?
Exercise! I have a wonderful trainer and am lucky to get to go to small group training sessions four days a week. It certainly helps keep the deadline stress at bay.
Any other tidbits about your life you might be willing to share?
I’m a dog lover, too! I have a Lab / Australian Shephard mix that I spend a lot of time with on the weekends especially. I’m happy to talk dogs with any of you any day!
