How long have you worked at your company?
9 years, as of January 2021.
How would you describe your role/job?
Much like the rest of us in the A/E/C marketing field, I wear multiple hats which range from proposal management and business development to website updates, and everything in between. I’ve also become an involuntary expert in large format printers.
What are the rewards of your job?
Being part of a team that wins significant projects in competition with much larger firms.
What are your challenges?
It always seems to come down to time. Not enough hours in the day, or days in the week to address everything I want to accomplish. The Pandemic has also presented all of us with unique challenges to developing new business in 2020.
What has been your most meaningful project?
The three Salt Lake Homeless Resource Centers we designed in 2017 (completed in 2019) was a major milestone in my career. We put a lot of effort into pre-positioning ourselves for this project, which had numerous stakeholders.
We won the project(s) with the right team and boundless passion for the intended vision of all stakeholders. The three resource centers represented a labor of love for the architects and designers who went above and beyond to ensure the success of these resource centers.
AIA Utah recognized The Geraldine E. King Resource Center with the 2020 Honor Award. This acknowledgment was especially meaningful to the design team. We’re lucky to have such dedicated folks on our team.
How long have you been an SMPS member?
9 years in Utah. I was also an SMPS member in New York.
What is your role in SMPS?
I have volunteered with the Education Committee and moderated panel discussions.
How has SMPS membership helped you?
SMPS has been a valuable source for educational and career development. SMPS Utah members are also great resources for problem solving and the daily challenges we experience as A/E/C marketing professionals.
What’s the best career advice you’ve received?
Turn adversity into opportunity. Yes, easier said than done, but possible.
What’s the best career advice you’ve given?
Perceived failures are opportunities for improvement.
What has contributed to your success?
I’m stubborn and a bit of old school. I’ve always believed that hard work is a path to success.
What’s on your bucket list?
Trekking in the Himalayas with my wife and daughter.
Guilty pleasure: what can you not live without?
Not so much a guilty pleasure, however it’s tough to imagine living without a big hug and the huge smile I get from my 9-year old daughter when I come home from a long day at work. Thankfully, it happens nearly every day… for now.
