Reaveley Engineers: Craig H. Neilsen Rehabilitation Hospital

Designed for patients with disabling conditions such as amputation, paralysis, stroke, and brain injury, among others, the Craig H. Neilsen Rehabilitation Hospital transforms technology, accessibility, and aesthetics into a place of inspiration and impact.
More than a 75-bed rehab center, the hospital incorporates a GApp lab to support the design and development of assistive technologies. A mobility garage offers space for patients, doctors, and engineers to work together to design, build, and modify mobility devices to suit individual needs.
Challenged with a steeply sloped site, SMPS Utah Platinum Sponsor Reaveley Engineers developed structural plans that maximize the patient experience. A two-story indoor/outdoor gym literally elevates rehabilitation activities. Building connectors link the Neilsen building to an existing hospital structure as well as the future Medical Education & Discovery Complex. And patient rooms, gyms, and open, maneuverable common spaces are drenched in light with views of Wasatch mountain and valley views.
It is a stunning space to be sure. More importantly, the hospital is purposefully engineered to promote patient and family emotional well-being alongside physical rehabilitation.
